Have a reason to Interact

A good character is someone who has a reason to interact with other players. Even better, they should have a small but positive urge to reach out or join in any ongoing activity. If your character sends out a "leave me alone" vibe, people will do just that.

Don't be a cliche

There are some common tropes that are overused. Orphans, hidden princes, fated heroes, murdered parents. Anything that already has a major motion picture built around it has been done to death.

Also this is a cooperative story creation game. We are all making the story together; no one person is the protagonist. Do not try and write yourself into that role in your background, as everyone else will ignore it or be irritated by it.

Don't overbuild it

Keep your starting backstory short. Include just enough to have something to talk about with another player. If you have discussed things with the plot team, they may offer you a plot hook as part of your story or meld it into their ongoing plotlines. But this takes time, a creative plot team, and the right mesh of your story and theirs. So talk to them and do not demand, only offer.

Talk with your Plot Team

Talk to your plot team. Seriously, talk to us. We like to know the basic outline of a character's history so we can weave some of your backstory into the plot. It also gives us a chance to let you know about anything which may need some tweaking to mesh well with the rest of the game. Click here to submit it to the plot team.
